Inexpensive passive UHF RFID tags and commodity exit-gate readers are widely available today. The primary barrier to their widespread use in retail theft prevention is not hardware cost, but the deactivation problem: determining which tagged items leaving the store have been legitimately purchased.
Conventional approaches address this through either:
- Physical tag deactivation at checkout (e.g., EAS systems), requiring cashier workflow changes, or
Direct POS system integration, requiring vendor-specific software modifications
Both approaches create operational and integration barriers that limit scalability.
We propose a logical deactivation architecture that eliminates both constraints.
A non-invasive inline bridge replicates the POS thermal-printer stream (ESC/POS) without modifying POS software. This produces a structured, privacy-minimized Expected Basket for each transaction. At the store exit, RFID readers detect tagged items and produce an Observed Basket. Logical deactivation is achieved by comparing these two sets:
- Items present in both → treated as purchased
- Items observed at exit but absent from the transaction → flagged for investigation
This approach requires no changes to cashier workflows and no POS integration, making it deployable across heterogeneous retail environments.
